German Wide Priority Programme

“Compositionally Complex Alloys – High Entropy Alloys (SPP CCA – HEA)”

Close to 100 scientists from all over Germany are engaged within the priority programme (SPP) CCA – HEA. Funding, provided by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), adds up to about 14 mill. € supporting about 50 PhD/post-docs within 14 projects. The second and final period will last to end of 2023, resulting in a total duration of 7 years. The Priority Programme is surrounded by another 20 “associated” projects with funding sources outside the SPP. Regular workshops in large and small groups, the exchange with international research institutes and cooperation within Germany made it possible to publish more than 100 scientific papers.

Out of this huge variety of results, three highlights of Bayreuth research will be presented. These cutouts deal with pure single-phase materials (“real” high entropy alloys) and discuss the effect of solid solution strengthening at high temperatures, sluggish diffusion, and exotic HEA with hexagonal closed-packed structures (equiatomic Y-Gd-Tb-Dy-Ho).
